JuJu Watkins, the breakout star of the USC Trojans women’s basketball team, made a notable appearance on the 'NBA Unplugged' broadcast during Boston Celtics versus Indiana Pacers Game 4 telecast on Tuesday.

In an exclusive interview, Watkins reflected on her historic freshman season and the influences that shaped her game. The ones joining the broadcast were the dynamic duo of Harry Ratchford and Spank Horton, alongside comedian Kevin Hart, who provided their usual humour and lively commentary. The conversation soon turned to Watkins' inspirations and the figures she had modelled her game after.

In typical fashion, Hart interjected with a humorous remark about his basketball past, joking, "I feel like she saw me play a lot." Hart, who attended La Salle basketball camp with legendary NBA player Kobe Bryant, added a light-hearted touch to the discussion.

Candace Parker is my idol - JuJu Watkins

When it was time for serious talk about her role models, Watkins nodded to Hart’s comedic influence but credited WNBA superstar Candace Parker for her basketball inspiration. "I guess I model kind of like my comedic style a little bit from Kevin, very funny. But basketball – Candace Parker," Watkins said.

Watkins’ admiration for Parker is well-founded. Both players are known for their dominance in scoring and rebounding, as well as their exceptional defensive prowess. During her collegiate career, Parker was a formidable defender, averaging 2.0 steals and 2.5 blocks per game. Watkins mirrored this defensive intensity in her freshman season, posting impressive averages of 2.3 steals and 1.6 blocks per game, earning her a spot on the Pac-12 All-Defensive team.

Parker’s impact at the WNBA level has been equally significant. Throughout her 16-year career, she has consistently demonstrated her all-around game, averaging 16 points, 8 rebounds, 1.3 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game. Watkins aims to follow in these footsteps, contributing offensively and making her mark defensively.
