In an unexpected move, former Illinois Fighting Illini forward Coleman Hawkins has decided to withdraw from the 2024 NBA Draft. Instead, he decided to transfer to a new collegiate program. This announcement, reported by The Athletic's Shams Charania, has sent ripples through the college basketball community.

Hawkins was poised to be one of the top players utilizing his final year of eligibility to further his development and capitalize on Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities. The 22-year-old had initially set his sights on the NBA, participating in the draft combine held in Chicago

Despite a strong showing, he was not projected to be a guaranteed pick. ESPN ranked him as the 79th prospect, CBS Sports placed him at 73rd, and The Athletic listed him at 87th in the draft class. These rankings indicated a challenging path to securing a guaranteed NBA contract, which likely influenced his decision to withdraw from the draft.

'I can enjoy a football game', says Coleman Hawkins

Reflecting on his decision during the draft combine, Hawkins expressed a desire for a change of scenery in his collegiate career. "I will never play in the Big Ten again, I wouldn't play in the Big East. I would go somewhere where I can enjoy a football game," he remarked, hinting at a potential move to a school with a strong football culture.

Born in Sacramento, California, the 6-foot-8 forward began his collegiate journey with the Illini in 2020 after attending Antelope High. The 2023-24 season marked a high point in his college career, where he averaged 12.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.5 steals per game over 35 games.

His impressive performance earned him Second Team All-Big Ten honours from the Associated Press and Third Team recognition from the media. Hawkins is the only player in Illinois history to surpass 900 points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists, 100 steals, and 100 blocks in his career.

Hawkins had previously declared for the 2023 NBA Draft but chose to return to Illinois for his final year, a decision that now mirrors his current choice to stay in college basketball. His return to the NCAA transfer portal signifies a new chapter as he seeks a program that aligns with his goals for both personal development and athletic success.
