Wheelchair basketball, a more inclusive version of the popular game, is becoming increasingly well-known. This sport, which is played in more than 100 nations, is known for its amazing athleticism and tenacity. It will be a major attraction at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. 

Wheelchair basketball was first created to help wounded troops recover. Since then, it has grown to become a popular sport for players with physical disabilities. Wheelchair basketball was first developed as a therapeutic sport but has now developed into a competitive sport.

Wheelchair basketball began in 1945 when the sport was introduced to two hospitals in the United States. The International Wheelchair Basketball Federation states that its purpose was to support wounded soldiers—many of whom had previously played basketball—in continuing their passion for the game despite their physical limitations.

Wheelchair basketball became popular in the United States by 1946 as a result of easy modifications that allowed wheelchair users to play the game. Due to this invention, the sport was able to gain popularity quickly and was eventually added to the 1960 Paralympic Games in Rome. Wheelchair basketball saw a major turning point when United States won two gold medals at the inaugural edition.

In 1960 wheelchair basketball made its debut in Paralympic Games

In 1960, wheelchair basketball made its debut as one of eight sports offered at the Paralympic Games in Rome. The United States won two gold medals in that first competition, which laid the groundwork for the sport's future expansion.
