After a devastating playoff defeat to the Denver Nuggets, LeBron James' future with the Los Angeles Lakers is still up in the air. Before the 2024–2025 season, the King has the option to terminate his contract. LeBron James's team, the Lakers, may shock the NBA by trying to acquire him in a trade to help prevent a situation where James signs a deal with another team. Even though Trae Young seemed like their best choice, things have changed because of Donovan Mitchell.

Cleveland Cavaliers recently lost the series to the Boston Celtics, with Mitchell injured in the final two games. If the Cavaliers do not provide him with a championship-caliber squad, everything is conceivable.

According to Jovan Buha, Donovan Mitchell has surpassed Trae Young to become the Los Angeles Lakers' top target. That is why if Mitchell does not sign a contract extension with the Cavs, a massive trade might be on the way. By the 2024 NBA Draft, the Lakers will be able to trade three first-round draft picks, as well as pick swaps and second-round picks, to make substantial squad changes.

Donovan Mitchell is entering the final year of his contract

Los Angeles Lakers have the stock needed to make such a move, with three first-round selections (2024, 2029, and 2031) to offer in any possible trade. Of course, in LeBron James last years, the franchise will go 'all-in'.

It's worth noting that Mitchell is entering the final year of his contract. Cavs might give him a great contract extension, but if Spidey declines, a trade could be made for Cleveland to receive something in exchange before he becomes a free agency in 2026.

This is far from an automatic transfer; who knows what Cleveland's asking price would be, what other clubs will pay, and whether Mitchell will even be available. Still, unless Mitchell extends or commits to the Cavaliers, Los Angeles Lakers supporters should keep a watch on the issue.
