The Denver Nuggets are reportedly set to welcome back veteran centre DeAndre Jordan on a one-year, $3.6 million contract. Jordan, who has spent the last two seasons as a backup to star centre Nikola Jokic, has proven to be a valuable asset off the bench.
In the 2023-24 season, he averaged 3.9 points and 4.4 rebounds per game, showcasing his continued effectiveness as a rebounder and finisher at the rim despite limited playing time. As Jordan approaches his 36th birthday, the Nuggets are likely counting on him to reprise his role from the previous seasons.
His experience and ability to contribute in short bursts will be essential as Denver aims to build on their recent success. Despite his age, Jordan remains a reliable presence in the paint, bringing veteran leadership and defensive prowess to the Nuggets' roster.
A money-saving deal for Nuggets!
Financially, Jordan's new contract does not pose a significant burden for the Denver Nuggets. Before agreeing to terms with Jordan the team was $74.498 million over the salary cap but still had some breathing room under the luxury tax thresholds. With $8.272 million under the first apron and $19.103 million under the second apron. This financial flexibility allows the Nuggets to retain Jordan without jeopardizing their cap situation.
Jordan's illustrious career includes three All-NBA selections and an Olympic gold medal. He spent his first 11 seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers, where he became a cornerstone of the franchise. Former Clippers coach Doc Rivers has even suggested that Jordan’s jersey should be retired by the team, highlighting his significant contributions during his tenure.

Although Rivers' statement about Jordan never leaving the Clippers voluntarily was not entirely accurate—Jordan left in free agency in 2018—it underscores the impact he had on the team. As he enters the twilight of his career, Jordan continues to show glimpses of the player who once dominated the league with his athleticism and defensive skills.
