As the Dallas Mavericks prepare to face off against the Boston Celtics in the 2024 NBA Finals, the team has made a significant move off the court by extending their general manager's contract, Nico Harrison. The announcement came on Tuesday, just two days before the highly anticipated tip-off of the championship series.

"Nice Harrison has demonstrated his leadership and capabilities in the Dallas Mavericks organization," said team governor Patrick Dumont in an official statement. "His vision, along with his efforts on behalf of our players and staff, have propelled our team to two playoff appearances in three seasons and, of course, this year's NBA Finals. We are proud to have him as part of our team for the long term, and we are excited to watch him continue to build on the foundation of success he has helped establish."

Harrison's journey with the Mavericks began in 2021 after an impressive 19-year tenure at Nike. Since taking over the reins, he has led the team to two conference finals appearances in just three seasons. His strategic acumen and bold moves have been instrumental in the Mavericks' resurgence as a powerhouse in the NBA.

'I am incredibly grateful to Patrick', says Nico Harrison

One of Harrison's most notable transactions occurred in February 2023 when he orchestrated the acquisition of Kyrie Irving from the Brooklyn Nets. Although the Mavericks controversially missed the playoffs that season, Harrison used the resulting lottery pick to draft centre Dereck Lively II, who has become a crucial player in the team's current playoff run as a rookie.

Harrison demonstrated his adeptness in team building ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline. By securing key starters in forward P.J. Washington and centre Daniel Gafford, he ignited a midseason turnaround that culminated in the Mavericks capturing the Western Conference title.

"I am incredibly grateful to Patrick and the entire Dumont and Adelson family for their continued trust and confidence and to Mark (Cuban) for his willingness to hire an unconventional candidate," Harrison expressed.

"Patrick and his family have accepted me as their own from day one and I am honoured to work alongside them, as well as head coach Jason Kidd, as we continue to build a winning culture in Dallas."

As the Mavericks gear up for their NBA Finals clash against the Celtics, the contract extension is a testament to Harrison's impactful leadership and the bright future he envisions for the franchise. The organization and its fans eagerly anticipate the continued success and growth under his guidance.
