With Melbourne as its permanent home, the Australian Grand Prix, a major event on the Formula 1 calendar, has hosted many amazing moments. The Australian drivers are still unable to accomplish an impossible feat, though. No Australian has ever been able to enjoy the grandeur of standing on the Albert Park platform, despite their outstanding accomplishments.
Several Australian drivers have come near but missed the podium finish due to the unfortunate series of events, which is commonly referred to as the "home curse." Australian drivers had a frustrating experience with their home Grand Prix, as evidenced by Mark Webber's incredible debut in 2002 and Daniel Ricciardo's near-miss in 2014. Since rise of Oscar Piastri, a bright youngster, has opened a new chapter in this story, but the "home curse" has not been broken. Even though he didn't place in the top three, Webber was asked to stand on the podium to celebrate because the moment was so important.
Not only did his performance launch his career, but it has also cleared the path for Australian drivers to continue competing in Formula One. All eyes will be on Oscar Piastri and Jack Doohan, two Australians, as 2025 approaches. To challenge the status quo and create Australian Grand Prix history, both drivers are preparing. Two-time Grand Prix winner Piastri is a serious contender in 2025 when he enters his home race.
Daniel Ricciardo was close to winning Australian GP in 2014
Ten years following Mark Webber's debut, Daniel Ricciardo emerged as Australia's next great star. His first Formula One points came at Albert Park in 2012, and his home Grand Prix was crucial to his career. In 2014, when he was competing for the first time as Webber's Red Bull replacement, Ricciardo appeared to secure a historic home podium by placing second.
He was disqualified for a fuel-flow violation a few hours later, ending his dreams of being the first Australian to formally take the podium in Melbourne. Even though Ricciardo participated in nine more home races, he was never able to duplicate that experience.
