The Austrian Grand Prix of 2022, which is scheduled to be held on July 10, was a thrilling spectacle of racing prowess and strategic brilliance. One of the standout moments of the race was Charles Leclerc's masterful overtaking of Max Verstappen, a move that not only demonstrated his driving finesse but also marked a significant victory for the Monegasque driver.

From the start, the race was intense. Max Verstappen held his pole position into turn one, with Charles Leclerc hot on his heels. The early laps saw a dramatic incident between George Russell and Sergio Pérez, with Russell's front left tyre clipping Pérez's rear right, sending Pérez into the gravel. This mishap resulted in a five-second penalty for Russell and left Pérez struggling at the back before he eventually retired due to the damage.

Meanwhile, Leclerc maintained relentless pressure on Max Verstappen. On lap 12, utilizing the Drag Reduction System (DRS), Leclerc seized his opportunity and overtook Verstappen to take the lead. Verstappen responded by pitting a lap later, a strategic move that temporarily gave him the upper hand as Leclerc waited until lap 27 to make his pit stop.

This strategic chess game saw Leclerc rejoin the race behind Verstappen, but by lap 33, Leclerc had once again caught up and executed another clean overtake on Verstappen. The battle between the two drivers continued, with Verstappen pitting again on lap 37 and Leclerc extending his stint until lap 49. By lap 53, Leclerc had closed the gap and passed Verstappen for the third time.

How Charles Leclerc clinch Austrian GP?

This move was pivotal, demonstrating Leclerc's superior racecraft and Ferrari's strategic acumen. Carlos Sainz Jr., Leclerc's teammate, was also in contention, closely following Verstappen with the aid of DRS. However, Sainz's hopes were dashed when his power unit failed on lap 57, forcing him to retire and triggering a virtual safety car. Both Leclerc and Verstappen took this opportunity to pit for new medium tyres, setting the stage for a tense final stint.

Despite grappling with issues in his car, Leclerc managed to fend off Verstappen's challenges, securing his first win without starting from pole. Verstappen finished second but earned an extra point for the fastest lap. Lewis Hamilton rounded out the podium in third, while Russell made a remarkable recovery to finish fourth. Esteban Ocon and Mick Schumacher followed, with Schumacher achieving his highest finish in Formula One.
