On this day, 14 years ago in 2007, a young 22-year-old Formula 1 driver announced his arrival at the greatest stage of the sport. Hailing from McLaren’s drivers’ program, the young Briton beat some F1 superstars to grab his first-ever Grand Prix victory. 

It was none other than Lewis Hamilton who won that race in Montreal to embark on a journey that placed him at the pinnacle of the sport. That was a dream season for Hamilton as he had earned five podiums in five races for McLaren so far.

Earning his sixth call, Hamilton went on to surpass the likes of Nick Heidfeld and Alexander Wurz, who finished second and third, respectively. Hamilton dedicated his first win to his father and since then never looked back.

Since that win in Montreal, Hamilton has registered 103 Grand Prix victories, most by any in F1 history. He also earned seven driver’s championships and eleven podium finishes at Montreal. It will be safe to say that Montreal has been one of his favourite tracks as he only once finished out of the top 5 in qualifying there.

‘I’m on a different planet’ – Lewis Hamilton on his first F1 win

After winning the race young Lewis Hamilton was overloaded with emotions as he said that it’s hard to grasp. “I’m on a different planet, definitely – it’s just really hard to grasp anything at the moment,” Hamilton said after winning the race.

“First to get into Formula One, and with a team like McLaren, then five podiums and a pole. And I got the pole position here and I did think that this was my time. I’ve been ready for this for quite some time, ready for the win. It was just a matter of where and when. I have to dedicate this win to my dad, without him this wouldn’t have been possible”, he further added.

It's worth noting that Lewis Hamilton finished second in drivers ranking just one point behind the leader and had to wait for two years to win his first World Championship which later became joint most as 7 wins to date.
