OTD in 2020 Lewis Hamilton displayed his amazing skills and superhuman powers to win the British Grand Prix. His victory at the Silverstone stands as one of the most extraordinary moments in Formula 1 history, showcasing his remarkable driving skill and unyielding determination. The race was expected to be another dominant display by Mercedes, but it quickly transformed into a dramatic and unexpected showdown in the final laps.

From the start, it was clear that Mercedes was the team to beat, with Hamilton and his teammate Valtteri Bottas occupying the front row of the grid. As the race started Hamilton looked untouchable on his home track as led the race comfortably after securing pole position. Bottas while trailing Hamilton was on course for a solid second-place finish, setting up what appeared to be a routine 1-2 for Mercedes.

However, the calmness of the race was shattered with just three laps remaining. Bottas' front left tyre suddenly failed, forcing him to pit and dropping him out of the points. This unexpected turn of events was only the beginning of the chaos, as Hamilton's car was struck by a similar fate on the very last lap.

What happened to Hamilton’s Mercedes?

With his front-left tyre failing and only three functioning tyres, Hamilton found himself in an almost impossible situation. Despite the severe handicap, Hamilton's experience and composure shone through. As his tyre disintegrated, he managed to keep his Mercedes on the track, limping towards the finish line with the relentless Max Verstappen in hot pursuit.

Here is the video:

Max Verstappen, who had recently pitted for fresh tyres in a bid to set the fastest lap, now found himself closing the gap rapidly. The tension was palpable as the seconds ticked away, and Hamilton's lead dwindled. Yet, even with Verstappen closing in, Hamilton's earlier efforts to build a significant lead paid off. He crossed the finish line just 5.8 seconds ahead of Verstappen, securing a victory that seemed almost impossible just moments before.

This win at Silverstone not only added another triumph to Hamilton's illustrious career but also underscored the unpredictable nature of Formula 1. What started as a comfortable race for Mercedes ended in a heart-pounding finish, highlighting the fine margins that separate success from failure in this sport.
