Lando Norris came dangerously close to a disastrous race at the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, barely avoiding significant damage after making contact with the wall at Turn 14. The McLaren driver, who had been leading for a substantial portion of the race, experienced a heart-stopping moment that could have altered the outcome. However, fortune was on his side, allowing him to continue with minimal impact on his performance.

The incident unfolded during Lap 31 when replays revealed Norris locking up his tyres as he approached the tight Turn 14 corner. Unable to slow down in time, he slid into the tyre barrier, making what appeared to be minor contact with the front wing of his car. This “kiss” with the wall was concerning, but luckily for Norris, the damage was minimal, allowing him to stay in the race.

Here is the video:

Despite the minor collision, Norris was able to keep his composure. The McLaren team opted not to change the front wing during his pit stop on Lap 31, where he swapped to a set of hard tyres. With a comfortable lead of 22.7 seconds, Norris continued to report potential front-wing damage, but it wasn’t enough to warrant a pit stop for repairs.

Race strategy continues to lead the game

Even with the front-wing scare, Norris maintained his lead, closely followed by the Red Bull of Max Verstappen and the Mercedes duo of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton. By Lap 39, the top positions remained unchanged, with Norris still holding on to first place.

Behind him were Verstappen in second, Russell in third, and Hamilton just behind in fourth. The rest of the grid saw Oscar Piastri, Carlos Sainz, and Fernando Alonso battling for position, while further back, Charles Leclerc and Nico Hulkenberg filled out the top ten.

The lucky escape allowed Norris to stay on track and avoid what could have been a costly repair job, which would have reshuffled the order significantly in favour of his rivals. As the laps continued, Norris's performance showed that he was determined to make the most of his good fortune and hold onto his lead.
