WATCH: Lewis Hamilton taking Bono for one last ride, decade-long love story ends in Abu Dhabi GP

Lewis Hamilton will be racing his last for the Mercedes team in this year's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. After all these years of successive partnership and six world championships together, Lewis will leave the team and move on to Ferrari. This ends the decade-long love story of Lewis Hamilton and Bono, his race engineer.

Lewis/Bono Love story

If you have heard Lewis Hamilton speaking with the team during the middle of the race, you would have often heard the name ‘Bono’. The British race engineer started his journey with the seven-time world champion in 2013 when Niki Lauda brought him from McLaren.

Before that, he was the race engineer for another F1 great Michael Schumacher during his second F1 stint. He is the backbone of Hamilton to win all 6 titles he won with Mercedes and probably the seventh title too, which he missed out on in the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand prix. Peter Bonnington and Lewis Hamilton are two different characters, but they got together well and nobody expected that to happen.

Even the champion when speaking about his race engineer called it a marriage. He said, “I mean with Bono it has been the longest engineer partnership that I’ve experienced and it's been amazing. But it's also been rough. These ups and downs bring us closer. Sometimes we get frustrated with each other. It's like a marriage, I guess, but we work it out and we keep pushing.”

Bono and Lewis on a hot lap

They will say farewell to each other after the Abu Dhabi Grand prix. But before that, Lewis Hamilton did something amazing for his race engineer. He took Bono on a hot lap around the Abu Dhabi circuit. For all these years Lewis travelled alone in his car with Bono on the radio. But this time both of them went for a ride together celebrating their decade long partnership.

Lewis took the Mercedes AMG car and put on a stunning hot lap around the track. Bono is very confident of Hamilton’s driving as he watched him closely over the years more than anyone. He sat quite calmly, held his head high like an F1 driver and enjoyed those amazing moments.
