The 2024 Formula 1 season resumed with an electrifying start as Lando Norris emerged as the fastest driver, leaving Verstappen and Hamilton behind in the first practice session (FP1) at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort. The session, marked by unpredictable weather and treacherous track conditions, saw the McLaren driver outpace home favourite Max Verstappen and the experienced Lewis Hamilton.

As the session kicked off, the Zandvoort circuit was battered by harsh winds and rain, making the track surface extremely challenging. Drivers struggled to find their rhythm, facing nerve-wracking moments as the coastal winds from the North Sea swept across the track.

Here is Lando Norris' flying lap:

The adverse conditions initially kept the lap times high, but as the hour progressed, the track began to dry, setting the stage for an intense battle in the final minutes. Max Verstappen, the reigning world champion, looked set to dominate early on.

However, his attempt to secure the top spot was thwarted by a dramatic spin at Turn 12. Verstappen clipped the inside kerb, causing his car to do a full 360-degree spin. Fortunately, there was no damage to his Red Bull, and he continued without further incident. Despite this setback, Verstappen managed to record an impressive lap time of 1:12.523.

Nico Hulkenberg's triple slid off!

Nico Hülkenberg also had a session to forget, with multiple offs that highlighted the difficulty of the conditions. He first ran wide at Turn 10, skidding through the gravel before later out-braking himself at Turn 1. His struggles hinted at potential brake issues, as such incidents are uncharacteristic of the seasoned German driver.

With Lando Norris leading the charge in FP1, the Dutch GP weekend promises more excitement as teams and drivers adapt to the unpredictable conditions. As the second half of the season kicks off, the battle for supremacy on the winding Zandvoort circuit is just beginning.

Here is the final FP1 result:
