VCARB driver Daniel Ricciardo's driving skills have been phenomenal since his early days. He was once regarded as one of the most dynamic and fearless drivers in Formula 1, known for his ability to seize opportunities and deliver victories, even from unlikely positions. One race that showcased his incredible talent was the 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Ricciardo's weekend in Baku didn't start smoothly, with an early crash relegating him to a P10 starting position. The race itself seemed to be going from bad to worse when Ricciardo was forced to pit early to remove debris from his front wing, dropping him down to 17th place. Despite these setbacks, Ricciardo remained determined, methodically working his way up the field as other drivers faltered due to accidents and mechanical failures.
Here is the video:
With Max Verstappen and Jolyon Palmer already out of the race, Ricciardo's fortunes took a positive turn when a Safety Car and subsequent red flag on lap 22 allowed him to catch up with the leading pack. At the restart, Ricciardo was in sixth place behind Felipe Massa, Lance Stroll, and Nico Hulkenberg, all of whom were struggling with various issues. Massa, in particular, was battling suspension problems, making him vulnerable on the long main straight.
An iconic manoeuvre to clinch victory
At this crucial moment, Ricciardo showcased his razor-sharp instincts. Benefiting from the slipstream of the three cars ahead, Ricciardo executed an extraordinary triple overtake heading into Turn 1. With a slight tyre lock-up, he managed to squeeze past Massa, Stroll, and Hulkenberg in a single, audacious move that left spectators in awe. This daring manoeuvre cemented his reputation as one of the best overtakers in Formula 1 at the time.
Following this spectacular overtake, Ricciardo found himself in third place, trailing only Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel. However, more chaos was yet to unfold. Hamilton, battling a loose headrest, was forced to pit, and Vettel received a 10-second stop-and-go penalty for a collision with Hamilton during the Safety Car period. These developments handed Ricciardo the lead, and from there, he didn’t look back.
Daniel Ricciardo went on to win the chaotic 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, a race that solidified his status as one of the most talented drivers on the grid. His remarkable reflexes and fearless overtaking ability were on full display that day, reminding everyone just how formidable he could be with the right car underneath him.
