In a dramatic turn of events during the Hungarian Grand Prix 2024, Formula 1 titans Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen collided while fiercely competing for third place. This high-stakes clash occurred on lap 63 as the two drivers vied for a podium finish, underscoring the intensity and unpredictability of the race.

The incident unfolded when Verstappen, on fresher tyres, compared to Hamilton's Mercedes, sought to overtake his rival by manoeuvring for the inside line into Turn One. In a bid to reclaim the third position, Verstappen locked up his front tyres, resulting in wheel-on-wheel contact with Hamilton. The contact momentarily lifted Verstappen's Red Bull off the track, creating a heart-stopping spectacle for fans and a challenging situation for the drivers involved.

Here is the 360-degree view of the crash:

Despite the dramatic nature of the collision, both drivers managed to continue the race. However, Verstappen's position was compromised as he was overtaken by Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who had been closely trailing the duelling pair. Consequently, Verstappen fell to fifth place, while Hamilton maintained his third position, finishing behind Leclerc.

The race stewards reviewed the incident and concluded that neither driver was predominantly to blame for the collision. This decision meant that the race results stood as they were, with no penalties issued to either Hamilton or Verstappen. As a result, Lewis Hamilton secured the third spot on the podium, while Verstappen finished in fifth place.

Verstappen's frustrations were evident throughout the race, frequently expressing his dissatisfaction over the team radio regarding both his car's performance and the team's strategy. Despite these challenges, Verstappen's lead in the championship, although reduced, remained substantial. He now holds a 76-point advantage over McLaren's Lando Norris, who finished second in a commendable one-two finish for McLaren.
