After 15 years of exile, the world's biggest automobile manufacturer, Toyota, is back in Formula 1 as a technical partner for the American racing team Haas F1. Toyota Gazoo Racing, the Japanese manufacturer's motorsport division, will join the Haas team.

Toyota Gazoo Racing and the American Formula 1 team Haas F1 will share knowledge and resources in their technical partnership. The Japanese squad is already competing in the World Rally Championship, World Endurance Championship, and Rally-Raid Championship.

Details of Toyota - Haas F1 deal

The team has a European base in Cologne, with two road-rolling wind tunnels. It was the original factory for the Toyota F1 team which was part of Fomrula 1 from 2002 to 2009. The Toyota Formula 1 team failed to win any races in F1 so it quit the sport.

In the United States Grand Prix, the Toyota Gazoo racing branding will appear on the Haas cars driven by Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen. The deal came to reality only because of the Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu.

He said “I'm hugely excited that the MoneyGram Haas F1 team and Toyota Gazoo racing have come together to enter into this technical partnership. To have a world leader in the automotive sector alongside us benefits both sides.

The resources and knowledge available at Toyota Gazoo Racing will be instrumental in our development and desire to further increase our competitiveness in Formula 1. In return, we offer a platform for Toyota Gazoo racing to utilise and subsequently advance their in-house engineering capabilities fully.”

He also thanked his long-term engine supplier Ferrari for allowing him to use their wind tunnel in Maranello. He added, “I am naturally pleased that we've had the support of the likes of Formula 1 and our long-term partner, Scuderia Ferrari - Who we announced our further continuation with earlier in the season.”

Toyota also thanked the Haas F1 team for their partnership and they were pleased to contribute to the motorsport and the Automotive industry. Haas F1 team driver Nico Hulkenberg who will move to Audi F1 next year has spoken about the progression of the American team and also credited that it will be an unstoppable force in the future.
