Toyota is planning for a potential full-scale return to Formula 1 very soon

Japanese automaker and the world's biggest auto brand Toyota are eyeing a Formula 1 comeback in the near future. They are in partnership with Haas and Alpine teams.

The Japanese Auto Giant Toyota has left a big mark in the Endurance championship with its back-to-back wins and domination. Now it has set its sights on Formula 1 where it failed a few decades ago. Last year, they had done a deal with the American team Haas F1 and agreed to help the team with resources and technology.

Achieving great success in Endurance races must have given them huge confidence and they are now learning Formula 1 dynamics with the help of the Haas F1 team headed by Ayao Komatsu. The technical partnership will allow the Toyota engineers to access the paddock and get some deep knowledge about the Pinnacle of Motorsport.

Toyota Back to F1

The Japanese brand also has a big partnership with Alpine principal Oliver Oakes F2 team Hitech. So it is very clear that Toyota is showing its intentions of a full-scale return to Formula 1 very soon. Masaya Kaji the president of Toyota Gazoo Racing spoke about the possibilities of making a return to Formula 1 shortly. He said, “We are, of course, studying the technologies for 2026 and even current technologies. I feel we’re gradually moving in that direction. We’re not at a stage where we would redirect all our resources there.”

Kaji also spoke about the importance of working with various Formula 1 teams and learning more about the sport. They also wanted to evaluate how much money, people, and resources are needed and they can’t make an immediate comeback without studying all of that. Toyota participated in 140 races between 2002 and 2009 in Formula 1.

In that 8 years, they registered 13 podium finishes and 3 pole Positions. In 2009 due to financial struggles, Toyota sacked their racing program and was away from racing before returning to Endurance Racing at the 24h LeMans. Toyota Gazoo Racing is a huge success for the Asian brand won the 24-hour Endurance Championships for the first time in 2018 with Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima. They continued their winning run for 5 straight years till 2022.
