McLaren's Oscar Piastri is ready to lift the Formula 1 title in the 2025 season

After finishing fourth in the driver's championship last year, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri is ready to fight for the title this year even against his teammate Lando Norris. The Aussie is seen as the potential world champion, given his performance last year.

He fought against some of the best drivers in the world and even triumphed against them by winning two races in Hungary and Azerbaijan, both very tough circuits. Oscar is the only Australian driver on the paddock, as Daniel Ricciardo was sacked from Red Bull last year.

The former F2 and F3 champion finished 82 points behind his teammate Lando Norris and 145 points behind title winner Max Verstappen. But this year he thinks about closing the gap and fighting for the ultimate title by himself.

Oscar makes it clear

When asked about being the title contender, Oscar said, “I think so, yes. I’ve still got some learning and improvement to do. I feel like now I’m getting to a stage where on certain days I feel like I have almost all the tools that I need. 

I’m just not putting them together as much as I want to, and I feel like last year I didn't have all the tools that I needed. I had some of them, but I still was missing some.” Piastri was the biggest reason for McLaren's triumph in the constructor's championship after 26 years in F1. Last year he finished only once out of the top 10, and the rest of the time came with some points. He also came very close to Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who finished 3rd in the drivers championship.

In the middle of the 2024 season, after seeing Lando’s chances for the driver's title, Oscar agreed to be his wingman for the rest of the season and did what he said. The two drivers showed some amazing team coordination, and they even swapped places and gave others the lead on many occasions. 

But this year we won't see those kinds of love and affection, as Oscar Piastri has clearly announced that he is going for the title. He added, “I feel like I have all the tools I need. I just need to be able to deploy them all the time.”
