Jenson Button seeks major overhaul in F1 format, echoes Fernando Alonso's idea

Formula 1 has become more or less a predictable affair. It usually includes Red Bull and Ferrari in the top 3 making it easier to guess. A similar incident happened in Miami with Max Verstappen being the fastest in qualifying, sprint and practice. However, this has now triggered a new debate among former drivers and fans about changes in the F1 arena. 

All these discussions prompted Jenson Button to advocate for Formula 1 to "eliminate practice" as a means to disrupt the established hierarchy. “I just think we need to get rid of practice,” the 2009 World Champion told Sky Sports.

“Let’s get rid of practice, straight into qualifying because you see in Sprint qualifying it’s always mixed up. I think Lando Norris had a really good chance putting it at the front, but once they get a few more laps under their belt, data information comes back to the team, setup tweaks, and they just go out there. Even though it was a little bit scruffy out there, they’re still kind of in team order”, he further added. 

Pedro de la Rosa had also advocated for the same! 

Button isn't alone in his desire for Formula 1 to abandon practice sessions, as Pedro de la Rosa has disclosed that Fernando Alonso shares this sentiment. He said Alonso preferred to commence the weekend with qualifying. Speaking on the F1 Nation podcast, the Aston Martin ambassador revealed, "Fernando actually would prefer to go straight into qualifying."

“He sometimes mentioned it. He doesn’t need to warm up, he doesn’t need another set of tyres to go faster, it’s just bang, the first lap, that’s it, that’s the fastest he will be the whole weekend because he doesn’t need to get up to speed”, he further added. Notably, this change will surely make a major impact in the racing arena but it has a long way to go.
