Former Ferrari Boss Mattia Binotto has been appointed as the operational and technical director of the Audi F1 Project. Audi which is entering Formula 1 next year taking over operations from Sauber has already signed Nico Hulkenberg as one of its drivers.
Audi Signed Nico Hulkenberg even before Binotto arrived. Now rumors suggest former world champion Sebastian Vettel could be Nico’s teammate next year. Sebastian Vettel and Mattia Binotto already worked together for Ferrari.
Vettel isn't the only choice
In the last Italian GP, the newly appointed Audi boss was seen in the paddock and was asked if the rumours were real. He answered “I Adore him, having worked with him in the past. Knowing him, you appreciate his greatness as a person even before as a driver.”
He said “At the moment, I haven't decided yet. It will take a couple of weeks. I want to look around and make the right choice, not for the short term. We’ll decide before the end of September.” Vettel ended the first phase of his F1 Career driving for Torro Rosso, Red Bull, Ferrari, and Aston Martin. He came to the limelight when he won the Italian GP for Toro Rosso driving in tough wet conditions.
Then he was signed by Red Bull. Being in Redbull F1 Racing Vettel achieved the prime of his career winning 4 world titles back to back. In Ferrari, he had the opportunity to win his 5th world title but failed to win the championship and came second fighting Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes.
The last phase of his career was for Aston Martin F1 where he gave good solid performance as a driver. He came second in the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. This was the first podium for Aston Martin F1 which is still a memorable race of that 2021 season.
Audi F1 will take over Sauber in 2025. Currently, Sauber has Zhou Guanyu and Valtteri Bottas. Neither of these drivers scored any points this season. Another option is Brazilian racer Gabriel Bortoleto the reigning Formula 3 champion. He is currently sitting second in the Formula 2 championship.
