Amid the rumours of Adrian Newey joining Mercedes after leaving Red Bull from the 2025 season, George Russell backed his team and engineers calling them better than their rivals. It’s worth noting that Mercedes has been one of the biggest rivals of Newey for the last decade.
Newey had dominated the F1 grid with multiple championships between 2010-13 and had to face some iconic defeats between 2014-21. As he is set to leave the Red Bull Racing team, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is keen to get him into consideration.
Speaking about the possibilities, Mercedes driver Russell backed his team while praising Newey. He said, "I mean, of course. You want to have the best engineers, the best drivers, the best mechanics, and the best individuals as part of your team.”
"But I think the team we have here, over the last 12 years, the group of engineers that sit in the room next door are still the most successful engineers that Formula 1 has seen in the last 12 [or] 13 years”, he further told media.
‘I have faith’, says George Russell
Further speaking about the current struggles at Mercedes, George Russell said that he has faith in the team and is committed to bounce back soon. "Now we're going through a period where we're not achieving the success that the team once achieved a few years ago," he acknowledged.
"But I have every faith in everybody, the people that won the championships, the new engineers and individuals who are part of this journey, to bring Mercedes back to the top."
It’s worth noting that Mercedes won lots of races in Formula 1 after rules changed in 2014. Now they're aiming for 2026 when the rules will change again. In recent years, they haven't been as successful as before. They only won one race in 2022, and haven't won any since.
