Starting from P8, Antonelli struggled to keep up with the other drivers. Mercedes made a brilliant strategy for the youngster with the help of Lewis Hamilton’s former race engineer Bono. Kimi gained his lost position by the end of the race. The Ferrari disqualification paved the way for Antonelli and additionally gained two more places to P6.

Mercedes is the only competitor for McLaren as Red Bull and Ferrari are struggling. The Maranello team lost their top four positions and is now behind the Williams racing team in P5. After the race, Toto Wolff learnt Kimi Antonelli was given the ‘Driver of the Day’.

The Mercedes boss wanted to convey the news to Kimi, so he took the radio and congratulated Antonelli on the achievement. But to everyone’s surprise, Antonelli was shocked to hear that and asked “Me?” The conversation is below and it is quite funny to hear.

Kimi Antonelli's funny conversation with Toto Wolff

Toto Wolff: Kimi! Driver of the day. Just saw the screen.

Kimi Antonelli: Me..?

Toto Wolff: Ya, interesting no?

Antonelli: Ya, that’s weird!

Wolff: I think it's your looks and your target group.

Bono: So, into the pit lane please mate. Toto is a real charm.

Wolff: And obviously, the looks of your race engineer also.

Agree or not, Kimi deserves appreciation as he is 18 and has already scored big points in his first two Formula 1 races. Many thought the Italian would become a crasher due to a lack of maturity. But Kimi handled his car very well and the Australian Grand Prix race was top-notch. Even in the F1 Chinese Grand Prix he played the patience game and drove with complete responsibility.
