Former F1 boss and one of the popular celebrities of the ‘Drive to Survive’ series, Guenther Steiner, said Fernando Alonso has left his ego since he returned to the sport in 2021. The Spaniard is one of the most successful drivers in Formula 1 history.

He is also one of the greatest drivers, comparing his driving skills and consistency. But the two-time world champion is waiting long to lift his third Formula 1 title. Next year will be his 20th year in Formula 1, and he hasn't won any races since 2013.

The Aston Martin driver took retirement in 2019, and for two years he played a key role in the Toyota Gazzoo racing teams' historic win at the 24-hour LeMans championship win. After winning that, Alonso returned to Formula 1 with his championship-winning team Alpine (Renault). But he didn't like that team culture and moved to Aston Martin in the 2022 F1 season.

After many years of podium drought, Alonso returned to the podium in 2023 with the Qatar Grand Prix and continued throughout the season with 8 Top 3 finishes for the Aston Martin team. This year he finished 9th in the drivers championship. In 2026, Aston Martin will partner with Honda for their Power unit, and Adrian Newey will be the car designer.

So Alonso believes in Honda and Adrian Newey for his third title, and this year he signed a contract extension with Aston Martin that extends till the 2026 season. Fernando was always known to be a headache to his employers, starting with McLaren, where he played a crucial role in the 'Spygate-Saga'.

Even during his last title win with Renault in 2006, Alonso wasn't satisfied with the team, and he felt left alone by the garage in key battles with Michael Schumacher. When driving for Ferrari, he was publicly slammed by President Luca di Montezemolo for asking for someone else's car as a gift for his 32nd birthday.

Alonso left his 'ego'

But Guenther Steiner believes Alonso had left all his ego outside when he returned to Formula 1 in 2021, and that is why he is very successful compared with his previous stint from 2015 to 2018. He feels Alonso has become more like Lewis Hamilton, as he controls all his emotions and energies brilliantly on the track. Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton are racing their last few years in Formula 1 and took the risk of changing to new teams and hoping for their final title.
