Oscar Piastri started the lap in P1, and the race was all about strategic calls and tyre management. Max Verstappen had a great start, beating Lando Norris and moving to third. But the Red Bull team's tyre strategy backfired completely. Kimi Antonelli faced issues with his car and was out of the race, which brought the yellow flag. This allowed McLaren to go for a free pit stop, and they emerged as the leaders. After the green flag, Verstappen tried to race the two McLaren cars but lost grip. It allowed Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc to overtake him from behind.
Later, George Russell also tried to attack Verstappen, but the Dutch driver kept his lead by overtaking outside the race limits. The Red Bull driver was asked to give back the position to Russell, which he refused, and both drivers touched each other. Verstappen has received a 10-second time penalty for that incident and is now 10th in the points table.
Another surprise was Lewis Hamilton’s pace as he was overtaken by Ferrari’s customer team driver, Nico Hulkenberg, and the seven-time world champion finished sixth. There will be a lot of discussion inside the Ferrari garage after the race weekend. After a long 66-lap race, Oscar Piastri has won the Spanish Grand Prix for the first time. Lando Norris finishes second, and Charles Leclerc ends in third. McLaren is leading both the driver and the constructors' championship.
