Audi's journey into Formula 1 is progressing steadily, and the latest development sees the luxury carmaker identifying two promising rookie drivers as potential candidates to join their F1 team in the 2025 season. The drivers under consideration are Théo Pourchaire, who currently serves as the reserve driver for Sauber, and Gabriele Bortoletto, an impressive talent emerging from the Formula 2 circuit.

Looking ahead to 2025, Sauber has already secured the experienced Nico Hülkenberg for one of the race seats. The remaining spot on the grid is still up for grabs, with veteran driver Valtteri Bottas considered a strong contender. However, Audi is also keen on nurturing young talent, leading to their interest in Pourchaire and Bortoletto.

Théo Pourchaire, who has been part of the Sauber family as a reserve driver, is seen as a natural candidate. Audi F1 project head Mattia Binotto confirmed that Pourchaire is on their shortlist, stating, "There is no doubt that he is on our list." The young driver has been closely monitored by the team, and his familiarity with Sauber’s setup could give him an edge.

Gabriele Bortoletto, another rising star, has also caught the eye of Audi's F1 team. Bortoletto’s strong performances in Formula 2 have demonstrated his potential, making him a viable option for the 2025 seat. Binotto mentioned that Bortoletto is "doing very well in F2 and has shown that he has great talent." However, the team is also considering other names, balancing the need for experience with the desire to invest in youth.

Audi expresses concern about Sauber's performance!

As Audi prepares to enter Formula 1 fully in 2026 with Sauber, the team has faced significant challenges in the 2024 season. Sauber currently ranks at the bottom of the standings, having yet to score a single point this year. This has raised concerns within the Audi camp, particularly among top executives like CEO Gernot Dollner and Binotto.

Binotto, who now oversees Audi’s F1 project, acknowledged the difficulties the team is facing. "We cannot afford to be in this position," he stated, emphasizing the need for Sauber to climb up the ranks and strengthen their performance. However, he admitted that the timeline for this turnaround is uncertain.
