Argentine driver Franco Colapinto is set to take over from Logan Sargeant for the remainder of the 2024 Formula 1 season, as confirmed by Williams Racing. The decision comes after Sargeant struggled with form throughout the season, continuing a challenging trend from his rookie year.

Despite being retained by the team for 2024, his future with Williams was cast in doubt after it was announced over the summer break that he would not be kept on board for 2025. Instead, Carlos Sainz has been signed to join Alex Albon next year.

Sargeant's difficulties were further highlighted at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, where he suffered a high-speed crash during free practice. The crash caused significant damage to his car, forcing him out of the qualifying session. This incident fueled speculation that Williams might replace Sargeant before the upcoming Italian Grand Prix, a decision that has now been confirmed with the signing of Franco Colapinto.

Who is Franco Colapinto?

Franco Colapinto, who is part of the Williams Academy, will race with the number 43 for the remainder of the season. The 21-year-old Argentine made his Formula 1 debut in this year’s British Grand Prix during the FP1 session, where he stepped in for Sargeant.

With this new role, Colapinto becomes the 49th driver to race for Williams since its inception as an F1 constructor in 1977. He also marks a significant milestone as the first Argentine driver in Formula 1 in 23 years, following in the footsteps of his countryman Carlos Reutemann, who also drove for Williams.

Before his F1 debut, Colapinto had been making waves in Formula 2, where he competed with MP Motorsport. His F2 campaign has been impressive, featuring a race win at Imola and podium finishes in the Spanish and Austrian feature races. Additionally, he secured points in seven other outings, placing him sixth in the current standings.

As Colapinto steps up to Formula 1, all eyes will be on how the young driver adapts to the pinnacle of motorsport and whether he can make an impact in the final races of the season. Williams’ decision to bring him in reflects their confidence in his abilities, and fans are eager to see what the future holds for this promising talent.
