Carmelo faced Strowman in the US Championship qualifying match, which was brief and entertaining. Hayes did not have to work harder but chose to work smarter. He was indirectly helped by Solo Sikoa and Tama Tonga, who distracted Braun with their interference. Solo and Tama thought Braun's loss was in Jacob's best interests.

At one point in the match, Braun had a huge advantage over his opponent. The established star dominated his opponent and seemed likely to claim a win. That was when Solo attacked him with a steel chair. Despite sustaining a chair shot, Braun did not feel any pain as he returned the favor to Sikoa.

Tama Tonga later joined the act and tried to attack Braun. But Strowman took him on and returned to the ring to face Hayes. As the referee dealt with the Bloodline members, Melo threw the steel chair at Braun. He convinced the referee that Strowman tried to use it to beat him.

The referee was convinced and hence declared Hayes the winner. Braun tried to explain that Hayes had forced the steel chair on him. But due to a lack of evidence, he could prove himself innocent. Hayes did not mind it at all and celebrated the win as he qualified for the Number One Contender match for the US Title.
