The world of professional wrestling, as is the case with every sport, thrives on the characters who end up producing the high-octane action. Over time, fans form a connection with the stars and it becomes tough for them to accept the end of their careers.
Even while these daredevils' high-flying manoeuvres are thrilling to witness, their wrestling manoeuvres frequently result in injuries that can ruin careers.
Here are the five heartbreaking career ends in WWE history:
5. Paige
Paige, whose real name is Saraya Jade Bevis, was a sensational talent in women's wrestling. Debuting at a young age, she quickly rose through the ranks and was touted as a future legend. Paige's charisma and in-ring skill made her a role model for young female fans. Unfortunately, a series of injuries, including a severe neck injury, forced her to retire from in-ring competitions in 2017. While Paige has transitioned into other roles within WWE, fans still find it hard to accept the fact that her career as a player is done and dusted.
4. Ric Flair
Ric Flair, 75, was a top-class wrestler back in the day. He played his last game at WrestleMania XXIV but that didn’t go well for him. Shawn Michaels was on the brink of victory and that is when an iconic line was recorded. In a display of respect and admiration for his idol, Michaels said, "I'm sorry. I love you," before delivering his finishing move. This emotional send-off, while marking the end of Flair's in-ring career, was iconic and heartbreaking.
3. Edge
Edge, whose real name is Adam Joseph Copeland, was one of the most popular wrestlers of the late 1990s and early 2000s. He ended up winning numerous championships thanks to his amazing skill set. He was also a fan favourite for the majority of his career. However, in 2011, he was forced to retire due to a serious neck injury. This came as a crushing blow to Edge and his fans, who had witnessed his meteoric rise to the top of WWE. Despite the forced retirement, Edge's contributions are undeniable, and in 2020, he made a famous comeback, much to the delight of his fans and experts.
2. Owen Hart
Owen Hart was known for his infectious humour, charisma and top-notch skills. He was a fan favourite, loved for how he went about his business. Tragedy struck at the 1999 over-the-edge pay view when a malfunction with the equipment releasing Owen from the rafters resulted in a fatal fall. Owen's death was a devastating blow to the wrestling community, and his memory is still cherished by fans worldwide.
1. Chis Benoit
Chris Benoit was a technically sound wrestler who had plenty of moves to back his strong foundation. His achievements used to leave fans stunned time and again. However, Benoit's career and life tragically ended in 2007. In a shocking turn of events, Benoit murdered his wife and seven-year-old son before taking his own life. It was later confirmed that his usage of steroids had taken a toll on his brain and that was probably why he took such steps.
