Shubman Gill’s exclusion from India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad has sparked widespread discussion, especially after his recent elevation as T20I vice-captain.
Gill’s omission comes soon after he was backed at the top of the order, a move that even saw batting positions reshuffled within the team.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar clarified that the decision was not about Gill’s ability but purely about the team combination India wanted for the tournament.
Agarkar explained that with a wicketkeeper expected to open, the management preferred having another keeping option in the XI to maintain balance.
When asked about Gill’s recent dip in form, Agarkar downplayed it, stressing that some players miss out in certain formats despite their quality.
The selectors believe the chosen squad fits their best combination for the T20 World Cup, while Gill remains very much in India’s long-term plans.
