Who is Lulu Sun? - A Qualifier who has risen through the ranks!

There have been a lot of surprising inclusions in Wimbledon 2024 this season. One of the players who has surprised us the most this season is a young unseeded player from New Zealand Lulu Sun. The Kiwi is currently set to play her first-ever quarter-final game against Donna Vekic, who is another surprise package of this major Grand Slam event.

The journey of Lulu Sun has been a great underdog story as she first had to get through to the qualifiers of the tournament and face World number 8 Qinwen Zheng in the first round which she won even after being a set down early on. All this led to playing a fourth-round match against the English upcoming superstar Emma Raducanu against whom she achieved another great win in a three-set thriller. She will now be playing in the playoffs of what is one of the most iconic major events in the game.

The girl who showed a surprisingly exceptional performance in Wimbledon 2024 came from a really unique heritage where she might have been born in New Zealand but was born to a Croatian father and a Chinese mother. Though the Tasmanian nation is not known to have a lot of great Tennis players, Sun still chose to represent this nation as her nationality. It was also not a long time ago that she made it into the professional scene as Sun turned pro in 2022 and won her first ITF title at the Saint Gaudens Open had also had a great junior career as well. She turned pro just 2 years ago at the age of 21 and now is that moment where everyone has recognised her as a rising star.

This is really an inspiring story of an athlete who was just playing college tennis for the Texas Longhorns, not able to make it to the main draw of Wimbledon 2022 and now is one of the contenders for the title this season. It will be great to see how far this magnificent journey of Lulu Sun will go and how much more she can achieve.
