The time has come when the Barcelona Open will finally come to an end with the final to happen on the day. It has been a tournament full of surprises that we could never expect. There were some great matches that we can look back to in this current clay season and there were some young talents we could see in the future as well. Overall it surely lived up to its expectation of being one of the most iconic clay tournaments.

Though we have seen some big stars thrive this season, there were also some surprising eliminations. These were the matches in the tournament we never saw coming at all. We will be talking about such upsets which involve some top-ranked players in the ATP as well. It will be interesting to find out who the players who caused these surprising results and which players had to end their Barcelona Open dreams at that moment.

Here are the top 3 upsets of Barcelona Open 2024 which surprised everyone completely:

3. Alex de Minaur loss to Arthur Fils

Alex de Minaur was one of the upcoming players in this generation who has been known for his incredible athletic ability on the court. He even made his way into the top 10 after some brilliant performances in the Monte Carlo Masters. It came as a shock to see the talented Australian lose to a 19-year-old rookie in Arthur Fils in two straight sets in the fourth round of the tournament. Looking at De Minaur’s performance before the tournament we all expected him to make the knockouts.

2. Andrey Rublev's loss to Brandon Nakashima

Another player who had a disappointing performance in Barcelona is the talented Russian Andrey Rublev. Rublev had the chance to come back in this tournament after an equally horrible run at the Monte Carlo Masters. We all expected Rublev to win against the lower-seeded American player Brandon Nakashima in the second round. What transpired was a disappointing straight-set loss for the high-ranking ATP player. The racket smash by Rublev told the whole story of the match in the end.

1. Rafael Nadal loss to Alex de Minaur

Probably the biggest upset of this clay season where we all were hoping for a great return and homecoming for Rafael Nadal. Even though we all know that de Minaur was a great upcoming talent, we surely did not expect him to beat the king of clay and 12 time Barcelona Open champion. Nadal went on to lose the game in two straight sets and was surprisingly outplayed by de Mianur in the second round of the tournament. Even though Nadal had just come back from injury we still expected him to be one of the favourites to win, but unfortunately all those dreams were broken by de Minaur.
