In a world where many of his contemporaries are stepping away from tennis, Swiss tennis legend Stan Wawrinka has expressed an unwavering commitment to continue competing. As stars like Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Richard Gasquet, and Angelique Kerber prepare for their farewells, Wawrinka stands apart, determined to pursue his passion as long as his body and game allow.

During a press conference at the Swiss Indoors Basel tournament, where he exited in the round of 16 after a hard-fought match against rising star Ben Shelton, Wawrinka shed light on his plans. The 38-year-old Swiss, who holds three Grand Slam titles, conveyed his decision, stating, "I plan to continue. Physically and technically I'm fine, and I feel I'm still at an excellent tennis level."

At a time when tennis is experiencing a generational transition, with young talents like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner dominating the ATP Tour, Wawrinka’s commitment to his career adds a layer of resilience to the sport's evolving landscape.

However, he acknowledged that his motivation is closely tied to his ability to compete in top-tier events. “A lot will depend on the results and the ranking I get,” he explained. “If I no longer have the chance to play in the big tournaments, that could influence my motivation—but so far, it hasn’t been like that.”

“Now it’s up to me”, says Stan Wawrinka

Ranked 149th globally, Wawrinka relies heavily on wild cards to enter major tournaments, but his physical condition remains robust, allowing him to put up impressive performances against younger players. He emphasized his dedication to regaining a higher ranking, saying, “Now it’s up to me to do things well on the court and improve my ranking. Only in this way will I have the opportunity to choose the tournaments that I like. My passion for tennis has not diminished.”

In a year marked by significant farewells, Wawrinka’s decision to keep playing defies the trend and underscores his unyielding love for the sport. While Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray prepare to bid the game goodbye, Wawrinka’s journey reflects his determination to leave on his terms, whenever that time may come. As he continues to compete, his fans remain hopeful that he will enjoy a few more memorable moments on the court.
