Roger Federer's career is marked by a series of iconic moments that have allowed him to transcend the sport of tennis and establish himself as a global icon. As a former world No. 1, he is widely regarded as the most popular tennis player in history. Even after retiring two years ago, his presence on the professional tour continues to draw attention.
Between 2004 and 2007, Federer showed exceptional dominance on the men's tour. The emergence of Rafael Nadal during this time sparked one of the most captivating rivalries in tennis.
Djokovic will be the sole member of the Big 3 competing next year as he sets his sights on securing the 25th Grand Slam title of his illustrious career.
The former Swiss champion is relishing his retirement and cherishing quality time with his family, while still making occasional appearances on the professional tour when opportunities arise.
Federer reveals his most heartbreaking loss
In a recent interview with Eurosport, Federer reflected on one of the most poignant moments of his illustrious career. He mentioned that Wimbledon 2008 stands out as a significant disappointment for him, primarily due to the dramatic way it concluded, in the fading light, against Rafael Nadal. With so much at stake, the match needed a definitive winner, and it ultimately favoured Nadal. Nadal's winner led to Federer's heartbreak.
“Probably Wimbledon 2008. Just because of the way it ended, in the darkness, with Rafa Nadal. There was so much on the line it needed a winner and it went his way. It was heartbreak, yeah.” Federer said.
The final of the 2008 Wimbledon Championships stands out as the most thrilling match in tennis history, a sentiment echoed by fans and insiders alike. While Federer triumphed over his fierce rival Nadal in the previous two Wimbledon finals, he faced a setback just a month earlier when Nadal humbled him in the French Open final.
"Looking back, I feel like I lost at the very first point of the match.I looked across the net and I saw a guy who just a few weeks earlier had crushed me in straight sets at the FrenchOpen and I thought this guy is maybe hungrier than I am and he's finally got my number." Federer said.
'Hey buddy, you're the five-time defending champion and you're on grass by the way. You know how to do this'. But it came too late and Rafa won and it was well deserved.” He concluded.
