The Italian Open has already given us a lot of surprising results, which has given us a glimpse of the competition being tougher than it looks right now. It has been a tournament full of drama which has given us the great and the dark side of the game. Apart from the top-ranked and seeded players, there are also plenty of talented players in the mix. This tournament has given us some of the best upcoming talents already.

Let us talk about the match between the defending Italian Open champion Daniil Medvedev and the American player Tommy Paul. Though we know that Paul is one of the most talented players with a lot of potential we surely did not expect the American to beat the 2nd seeded player in the tournament. There was no doubt Medvedev was the favourite to win this encounter.

Tommy Paul achieves straight victory over world number 4

There might have been a lot of support for the Russians, but it was Tommy Paul, who was dominating the game from the first game itself. Tommy Paul completely outplayed Medvedev in the first set winning 6 games to 1. This already put the Russian star under pressure straight away. The second set did see Medvedev's comeback, but in the end, it was Paul who got the important break in the final set and went on to beat Medvedev for the first time in his career.

This was a match where the defending champion looked completely out of depth and Tommy Paul was onto every plan Medvedev had against him. This was one of the best games for Paul as he made it to his fifth ATP 1000 quarter-finals and kept his title chances alive. This was really a complete performance filled with some aggression where he put Medvedev completely under pressure throughout the game. It will also give him confidence knowing he beat the defending champion and one of the top-ranked players in the ATP scene.
