Regarding a possible Australian Open showdown between Nick Kyrgios and Jannik Sinner, former silver medallist Laura Robson offered her thoughts. After the Australian stated that he would like to play the World No. 1 in Melbourne, Robson is upbeat about the possibility of this match. Nonetheless, former British No. 1 Laura Robson hopes that Nick Kyrgios and Sinner continue to appreciate one another. Sinner has emerged as 2024's most notable player, taking home two Grand Slam championships and rising to the top of the world rankings.
Nevertheless, a drug scandal that would go until 2025 marred his season. However, Kyrgios and other players have criticized him for this. “I don’t think you ever want a situation where all respect goes out the window. If we can avoid that, that would be great. It would be super interesting if they played each other, especially in the early rounds, because Nick, he’s an unpredictable player anyway. But if you played him first round, you just know that you’re going to get no rhythm and you’ll be walking side to side on his service games quite a lot as he aces you,” Laura Robson said as per Euro Sports.
Nick Kyrgios is excited to face Jannik Sinner
Kyrgios recently made an appearance on the Nothing Major podcast, where he expressed his excitement about facing Sinner in court and restated his criticism of him regarding the doping scandal. In less than two weeks, the 2022 Wimbledon runner-up will make his comeback to the circuit at the Brisbane International, where he will be drawn with players like Holger Rune, Grigor Dimitrov, and Novak Djokovic. Kyrgios and Novak Djokovic will form a new and unparalleled combo in the doubles draw.
"But Nick has his opinion and it will certainly make things more interesting, maybe more spicy if they were to play each other,” the former World No. 26 stated. “But I think when on the court, it's a different situation. I imagine that a lot of that talk will go out the window if they ended up playing each other."
Following his participation in Brisbane, Kyrgios will travel to Melbourne to play singles matches with his protected ranking. Alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis, with whom he shared the 2022 Australian Open championship, he will also play doubles. Kyrgios has caused controversy by criticizing World No. 2 Iga Swiatek and Sinner after their drug scandals. Kyrgios took advantage of Swiatek's subsequent suspension to subtly reintroduce Sinner's case into the discussion and to restate his critical criticism.
