The ATP tournament has been known for having slime major upsets this season. We got our first surprise when Stefanos Tsitsipas was eliminated in the 2nd round by Thiago Montiero. The Madrid Open is close to being another tournament where we are witnessing some major twists and turns already. There have been some major tournament players that have lost to some lower-seeded players in the mix. We are sure to experience another intense competition once again.
The match was set today between Holger Rune and Tallo Griekspoor. There was no doubt that Rune was the player to win this encounter and make it to the last 16. It also made sense since Tallon Griekspoor might be a talented player, but has not been as successful as the young Danish who has made it to three Grand Slam quarter-finals. There were high hopes for Rune going into this tournament as well.
Rune faces a major upset
We all have to remember that this has not started as the most memorable season Rune so far. We still expected him to be the one to win on the day. Rune was surprised in the first set itself as Griekspoor went on to win the first set 6-4. The Danish superstar still made a comeback in the second set where he made an important break in the game. It was still anybody’s game in the last and final game and it was Griekspoor who went on to win the game after convincingly beating the top-ranked player.
This was another disappointing tournament for Rune who was comfortably one of the top players who was at least looking good for a knockout finish. To see him lose to a struggling player in Griekspoor was heartbreaking. Griekspoor has been one of the players who has been a part of a major upset in the match. For Rune, it seems like the time to go back to the drawing board and improve his game for the future.
