It seems that there is going to be a major shake-up in the WTA rankings on May 19th after Italian star Jasmine Paolini wins the Italian Open 2025 singles title. The Polish star was already guaranteed a drop from number two to four after her horrendous show in the Italian Open 2025, where she was the defending champion.
However, Paolini's win in the summit clash over Gauff now dips Swiatek's rank from four to five. And it comes now at the crucial time, as the new WTA rankings will be used by Roland Garros to make its seeds ahead of the second Grand Slam of the year. Now, Swiatek can draw any of the top four seeds in her quarterfinal clash and might have to go through three of them in a row to defend her French Open 2025 title.
Notably, Iga Swiatek has been hailed as 'Queen of Clay' for the last so many years for her remarkable run on the clay court swing. However, her form seems to be declining this time. The 23-year-old star player suffered a defeat in her quarterfinal round in the Stuttgart Open 2025 after losing against eventual champion Jelena Ostapenko.
However, she did reach the semi-finals of the Mutua Madrid Open 2025 in the Spanish capital before losing against USA star Coco Gauff. Thereafter, the tennis star faltered badly in the Italian Open Round of 32, and this time, her rankings are set to take an extremely big hit.
“I feel like I worked on some technical stuff on my serve and my forehand. I know that I haven’t always been able to implement that on the match court, which is not perfect. This is tennis. I don’t have, like, three months to change some technical thing, and then your body just remembers it. It would be much easier if we had a system like that. I feel like I wasn’t so good at implementing it all the time. Sometimes I changed the way I play in a way I shouldn’t have done, and it’s completely kind of on me,” said Swiatek after losing in the Italian Open 2025.
