There is no doubt that the French Open is usually the one grand slam event where the same players seem to play more times than the other grand slam events.
However, there have been several remarkable occasions where the underdog defeated overwhelming odds and shocked the tennis world. In the same vein, let's have a look at the top five major upsets in the ongoing French Open tournament so far.
5. Mirra Andreeva vs Victoria Azarenka
Mirra Andreeva edged out Victoria Azarenka 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in the second round of the marquee event. The 17-year-old star player also went on to win the third and fourth rounds.
The Russian star, who is the youngest player in the marquee event, is gearing up to face world number two, Aryna Sabalenka, in the quarterfinals.
4. Varvara Gracheva vs Maria Sakkari
Tennis star Varvara Gracheva crushed Maria Sakkari in the opening round of the French Open 2024, pulling off one of the tournament's first upsets. Notably, the match ended in just over two hours and ten minutes, giving Gracheva the victory in a remarkable comeback against the Greek star.
However, the world number six Maria was a strong contender to win the title, but she suffered an early defeat in the tournament.
3. Matteo Arnaldi vs. Andrey Rublev
Tennis star Matteo Arnaldi thrashed Andrey Rublev 7-6 (6), 6-2, 6-4 in the third round of the Roland Garros.
Notably, Arnaldi was eliminated as Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated him in round four. Following the same, Carlos Alcaraz defeated Stefanos and made it to the semi-finals of the game.
2. Daniil Medvedev vs. Alex de Minaur
Alex de Minaur moved to the Roland Garros quarterfinals for the first time after dominating Daniil Medvedev in a match between two of the most formidable competitors on the ATP Tour.
Notably, the 11th-seeded De Minaur stunned the fifth-seeded Medvedev 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 in a tough match. Meanwhile, De Minaur became the first Australian player to advance past the quarterfinals since 2004's world number one, Lleyton Hewitt.
However, Medvedev has very strong chances of winning the title, but the Aussie star thrashed him out of the event.
1. Rafael Nadal vs. Alexander Zverev
Rafael Nadal, the tennis legend who turned the red clay of Roland Garros into a playing field for others, was out of the marquee event in the opening round after suffering a defeat against Alexander Zverev.
Notably, the tournament became as integral a part of Nadal's identity as a competition has for any player. The star player has 14 titles to his name, and he was a strong contender to win the title; however, the Spaniard defeated him and made it to the quarterfinals, where he is set to face De Minaur.
