Jannik Sinner survived a scare from Frenchman Terence Atmane to enter the quarter-final of China Open on Saturday. The Italian world No. 2 came through with a scoreline of 6-4, 5-7, 6-0. The four time Grand Slam winner will face 57th ranked Fabian Marozsan of Hungary in the Beijing last eight.
"It was a very tough match today,' Sinner said. "I felt like he was serving great."
"I started off very well in the third set, then I saw (Atmane) struggling a bit physically. It's not how you want to win a match, but I'm very happy to be again in the next round."
Sinner started positively, winning the first set without much fuss, but his oppnent fought back as he broke in the final game of the second set to take it 7-5. However, Atmane struggled with cramps at the back end of the match.
Sinner took full advantage of the situation and raced through the third set without dropping a game. The match was over in 2 hours and 21 minutes. The 24-year-old's fitness and consistency helped him come out on top.
There was also victory for Alex De Minaur as he got the better of another Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(2) in a closely fought contest. The Australian will play either Jakub Mensik or Arthur Cazaux in the quarter-finals.
Swiatek cruised past Yue
In the women's draw, Iga Swiatek cruised past home favourite Yuan Yue 6-0, 6-3, in the second round. The world No.2 will next face Colombia's Camila Osorio.
Swiatek won the first set without dropping a game when the Chinese fired long. The Polish six-time Grand Slam winner wrapped things up when Yuan returned to the net. The 24-year-old praised her opponent after the match.
"She was reading the court pretty well," Swiatek said,"it wasn't easy, and every game was tight."
"I have great memories," the 2025 Wimbledon winner said of her history in the Chinese capital. "But every tournament is a different story, so you gotta start from the beginning and grind.
