Iga Swiatek
Iga Swiatek suffered an early exit at the China Open after the top seed was beaten by Emma Navarro 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 in the last 16 on Wednesday. The 24-year-old world no.17 will take on either Marta Kostyuk or compatriot Jessica Pegula in the quarters.
"I definitely had some adjusting to do after our last couple times playing," said Navarro, who had lost both previous encounters with Swiatek.
"I wanted to come out and play calm and steady ond focused tennis. I did that, so I'm happy with the way the match went tonight."
Swiatek saved four break points in the very first game but didn't look in great touch, firing a slew of shots just long. The six-time grand slam winner powered past the American with six aces in the second set.
However, the Polish star was stunned in the final set, as she failed to win a single game before Navarro secured the victory with her only match point.
"I'm feeling good but there's always stuff to get better at. Lots to work on but I'll try to enjoy this one and then it's back tomorrow," Navarro added.
Swiatek: Just played bad
Swiatek, who hit a staggering 70 unforced errors, admitted that she "just played bad".
"I'm not injured. I just played bad today. I managed to, like, work on it in the second set. Then in third, probably the mistakes I did from the beginning of the match kind of came back," Swiatek said after the match.
"I didn't really, I didn't know, fix the shots that I played wrong or something. I kind of knew what I'm doing wrong. I don't know, I was stuck in doing it wrong rather than actually solving it.
"So yeah, for sure I was a bit more nervous because of that and maybe too much emotions, as well. I will try to, like, keep it more cool next time so I have more space in my head to problem solve" said the 24-year-old.
