The Indian men's hockey team has so far made huge strides in the 2024 Paris Olympics. They defeated Great Britain in the quarter-final on Saturday (August 4), and are just two wins away from winning historic gold. However, ahead of the crucial semi-final clash, the Men in Blue suffered a major setback when one of their key players was banned.

India defender Amit Rohidas has faced a one-match suspension for breaching the code of conduct in the match against Great Britain, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) has confirmed. Rohidas was handed a red card in the quarterfinal match and was off the pitch almost 40 minutes from the final hooter.

“Amit (player No. 30 of India) was suspended for one (1) match for a Breach of the FIH Code of Conduct which occurred during match no M32 India v Great Britain on 4th August 2024,” the FIH said in a statement.

“The suspension affects match no. M35 on 6th August 2024, where ROHIDAS Amit will not participate, and India will play with a squad of fifteen (15) players only,” it added.

The incident took place in the 17th minute when Rohidas was trying to run with the ball and was being challenged by Calnan from behind. The Odisha player tried to escape from the space but his stick was in an unnatural position and hit the Englishman on the head. Rohidas was shown a red card shortly after the discussion between the referees.

India to face Germany in semi-finals

However, Team India let that affect their performance as they went on to finish 1-1 in regular time. Some extraordinary saves from goalkeeper PR Sreejesh in the shoot-outs helped India clinch a remarkable 4-2 victory. The Hermanpreet Singh-led will now face Germany in the semi-final. Having already defeated giants like New Zealand and Australia, India are aiming for their maiden gold this time.
