Darwin Nunez and over a dozen Uruguayan teammates entered the stands during a confrontation between fans at Bank of America Stadium on Wednesday night after the team's 1-0 defeat to Colombia during the Copa America semifinal.

Following the final whistle blown by Mexican referee Cesar Ramos, a brawl erupted behind the Uruguay dugout following a rough and competitive encounter. About 90% of the 70,644 spectators supported Colombia; nonetheless, there was a small group of Uruguayans that battled with Colombians while drinks were being thrown.

Nunez then ascended a staircase amid the throng of people. Nunez was seen striking a fan in the Colombian national team's colours on camera. According to Jose Maria Gimenez, the captain of Uruguay, players fled into the throng to keep their families safe. Over twenty minutes after the match, while Colombian supporters left the field to celebrate, some 100 Uruguayan supporters and federation employees stayed in the stadium for their own safety.

Following the match, CONMEBOL issued a statement in which it vehemently denounced any instance of violence that had an impact on the game. The statement read, “Our work is based on the conviction that soccer connects and unites us through its positive values. There is no place for intolerance and violence on and off the field. We invite everyone in the remaining days to pour all of their passion into cheering on their national teams and having an unforgettable party.”

Will Darwin Nunez face any suspension for his violent conduct towards Columbia fans?

There are rumours that a suspension or a hefty fine will be shelled out to the Liverpool striker. He has a case that he was just going into the stands to save his family and be there for the Uruguay fans who were being assaulted and harassed by the Colombian supporters.

In past seasons, there have been less instances of such issues so a concrete verdict might take time to come around. But Nunez wouldn’t mind a suspension from CONMEBOL since it would not affect his upcoming season with Liverpool. Ideally, Nunez should just be fined a small amount for going into the stands but the decision still rests with CONMEBOL.
