Copa America 2024 has advanced to the quarter final stage; in contrast to the Euros, there will be no overtime in this stage of the competition. Rather, until the tournament final, matches that remain tied after 90 minutes and stoppage time go straight to penalties. Many tournament knockout matches have teams compete in two 15-minute halves if the score is tied following 90 minutes, only after that the teams have to resort to penalties, however that is not the case in the Copa America.

Although there isn't a new rule for Copa America, there will be additional time for the July 14 final. While teams like Mexico and the United States tumbled out, teams like Argentina, Ecuador, Venezuela, Canada, Uruguay, Brazil, Colombia, and Panama continue to have a chance to win the Copa America trophy.

The direct elimination matches will start this Thursday with the match between Ecuador and the Argentina National Team. Everyone was able to determine who the front-runners were and who shocked us by making it to the quarterfinals and are eager to keep creating history during the group stage. Naturally, the loser returns home empty-handed.

The top teams still competing in the Copa América are Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, and Colombia. This list does not contain anything new, as most viewers assumed from the preview. Uruguay and the Argentina National Team both performed well, winning their groups with perfect scores.

Penalties set to be the tiebreaker in Copa America 2024

From the Copa América 2024 quarterfinals or semifinals, everything is different. In case of a draw, penalties will be used to end the contest. If there are tied goals at the end of regulation in the quarterfinals, semifinals, or third-place match, a series of penalty kicks will determine the victor.

In particular, if there are tied goals after the conclusion of regulation in the Final Match, two 15-minute halves of extra time are going to be played. In the event that there is still no winner at the completion of extra time, the Copa América 2024 champion will be determined by a penalty kick shootout.
