In the Copa America 2024 quarterfinal, Brazil—the men's team with the most trophies won in the FIFA World Cup was heartbroken, prolonging their trophy drought. After defeating Peru 3-1 in the championship match, it won the Copa America in 2019, which is still its only significant title. But the under-23 team had cause for celebration when they successfully defended the gold title in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, two years later.

Malcolm, a former Barcelona winger, scored the game-winning goal in extra time as it defeated Luis de La Fuente's Spain in the gold medal match. Together with Uruguay, Argentina, and the Soviet Union, it is still the second-most successful Olympic team with two gold medals.

However, Brazil will not compete in the next Olympics, which will be held in Paris, adding to the country's suffering as it seeks to reclaim its lost grandeur. Brazil will not compete in the 2024 Olympic Games after losing the qualifying against Argentina 1-0 in February 2024, thanks to a Valentin Barco goal.

Brazil to miss Olympics for first time since 2004

Brazil will miss out on the Olympic Games for the first time since 2004. Luciano Gondou scored the winning goal for Argentina's under-23 squad, coached by Javier Mascherano, in the pivotal South American Olympic qualifying match. In the 78th minute, he headed Barco's cross past goalkeeper Mycael at Caracas' Brigido Iriarte Stadium.

South America's Olympic qualification for men's football provides two berths in Paris 2024, with Paraguay securing the last spot after defeating Venezuela 2-0. Argentina concluded the last group stage campaign with five points from three games and cannot be overhauled by the other teams.

In the last four Olympics, Brazil has medalled in men's football. Argentina finished the last qualifying round with five points, having won gold both in 2004 and 2008. Out of all the teams that have competed in the Olympics, only five have won gold twice they are Brazil and Argentina.
