English Premier League club West Ham United on Saturday sacked head coach Graham Potter after a disastrous start to the 2025-26 season. The Hammers are languishing at the 19th spot in the league standings, having recorded one win and four defeats so far.
"Results and performances over the course of the second half of the last season and the start of the 2025/26 season have not matched expectations, and the Board of Directors believe that a change is necessary in order to help improve the team's position in the Premier League as soon as possible," the club statement read.
The club also confirmed the exit of assistant coach Bruno Saltor, first team coaches Billy Reid and Narcis Pelach, lead goalkeeper coach Casper Ankergren, and goalkeeper coach Linus Kandolin with immediate effect.
Potter, who arrived in January on a two-and-a-half-year contract to replace Julen Lopetegui, was unable to make an impact. West Ham finished last season in 14th position. Moreover, the new season was no better for the Hammers having lost four of their first five league games. Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace, extending a winless streak at the London Stadium to eight games, proved the final nail in the coffin for the 50-year-old tactician.
Potter's successor
The attention now shifts to Potter's successor, with the British media suggesting Nuno Espirito Sannto's name. The Portuguese tactician was sacked by Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis three weeks ago due to poor personal relations. The 51-year-old former Wolves and Spurs boss coached Forest to a remarkable seventh place finish last season, lifting the club to European competition for the first time in 30 years.
West Ham's lone win this season came against Forest towards the end of August. Last Saturday, the Hammers suffered their fifth defeat across all competitions against Crystal Palace despite the fact that Jarrod Bowen leveled the score early in the second half. The Irons' next assignment is away to Everton on Monday night.
