Former Indian football skipper Sunil Chhetri was recently a guest on the Raj Shamani podcast. The host asked the former striker the reason why Indian football is consumed as much as some of the European leagues. The question was specifically in terms of the declining popularity of the Indian Super League.

The question was “Why do not people watch football much?”. Sunil Chhetri was pretty honest with his answer when he said, “You have two hours and you want to consume something on TV or phone. Wouldn’t you pick the best quality?"

Those were comments from a player, who is considered one of the greatest goal-scorers. Sunil Chhetri also said, “As what you think, you will not say that I want to consume, these top quality things that I have for 2 hours because everybody has less time and I have seen so when somebody has the option of watching. Mbappe and Messi why would he or she, choose to watch ISL?”

During the Raj Shamani podcast, Sunil Chhetri said, “If even tomorrow you are there imagine and you make yourself a third person you have only two hours in the morning and you go and work in the morning.”

Sunil Chhetri also said, “And you came and sit and put it on at 7’o’clock and you have to consume something for two hours and you have the option of Premier League match is going on between Arsenal and Man City tough game and you have an option of BFC and Hyderabad are playing just being patriotic doesn’t mean that you will leave the quality and watch this and it isn’t possible for a person at the end it’s quality and it’s an organic thing.”

Former Indian skipper Sunil Chhetri recently retired from international as one of the top scorers. Sunil Chhetri took the mantle of leading the Indian sides’ forward line after the retirement of Bhaichung Bhutia. The retirement of the 40-year-old has left a huge void as the next generation prepares to step up.
