Rafael Benitez said “If you want to buy Steven Gerrard this time you bring 200 million. 180 million for Gerard and 20 million for Carragher. This brought a huge laughter amongst all the panelists with Carragher in particular putting up a gracious laugh.
Steven Gerrard played a key part in Liverpool winning the champions league in 2005 under Rafa Benitez. The Spanish manager nearly led the team close to a title in 2008/2009 as they finished second in the table behind Manchester united.
Rafael Benitez reveals he was close to signing former United legend
Recently Rafael Benitez mentioned that he was close to signing former Manchester United defender Nemjana Vidic. The Spanish coach had a word with the former Serbian star.
Rafa Benitez said “Was talking with Vidic before he signed for Manchester United. I knew 100 per cent he was not coming for us. When I was talking with him he said, “Oh, you have to talk with my girlfriend, she talks English. Oh, I like the cities like Manchester and Liverpool”
The Spanish coach also said “And I thought, “Why is she talking about Manchester?”, so I knew already that United were making a bigger offer than us. We didn’t have the money to buy the players and we didn’t have the money to pay the players. That why, always I say, why for Liverpool it is so difficult to stay there for a while”
Liverpool’s former manager also went onto reveal that “I think the new owners were lucky because we sold [Fernando] Torres for £50m, then afterwards it was [Luis] Suarez, then afterwards it was [Philippe] Coutinho, so they have money to spend”
“If not, you have to spend a lot of money that Chelsea, Manchester City, that they spend, and they don’t need to bring the money, they spend the money. ‘For us, for Liverpool, it was very difficult. Why? Because the families, they prefer to stay in London because of the airport or maybe Manchester because of the international airport,” Added Rafael Benitez
