The Ballon d'Or 2024, much like its predecessors, was marred by controversy. From Real Madrid, players boycotting the prestigious event to allegations of unfair treatment towards Vinicius Junior due to football politics, this year's Ballon d'Or made headlines for all the wrong reasons.
While the announcement of Rodri as the winner may not come as a surprise, given his impressive performances and accolades from the past season, Madrid fans and players hold contrasting viewpoints on the matter.
Vinicius Junior early celebrations at a part: Reports
Vinicius Junior celebrated with his closest friends until the early hours, as reported by Alfredo Matilla and Hugo Cerezo from Relevo.
Following the festivities, he learned that he would not be receiving the Ballon d'Or. Vinicius had been quite optimistic about his chances, even going so far as to promise a Rolex watch to each of his Real Madrid teammates in recognition of their support.
Things didn't turn out as planned for Vini
Vinicius had a terrific season, marking himself as a top contender for the Ballon d'Or with 24 goals and 11 assists over 39 games. His contributions were pivotal in Real Madrid securing the 2023-24 La Liga and UEFA Champions League titles, along with the Supercopa de España.
Interestingly, it was Rodri who took home the Ballon d'Or 2024 award, making history as the first Manchester City player to achieve this honour. The announcement at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris recognized Rodri's outstanding performance, placing him among the elite, as he became only the third player and the first midfielder since Luca Modric in the past 16 years to receive the accolade after Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Following his Ballon d'Or debacle, a resolute Vinicius Junior made it clear that he is prepared to strive for the accolade working ten times hard if necessary, asserting that his opponents are not ready for what's to come.
