Fluminense has confirmed Thiago Silva's re-signing prior to the 2024/25 season. The 39-year-old defender is likely to sign a two-year agreement with the Brazilian club, in which he rose through the academy ranks in the late 1990s prior to making 143 appearances from 2006 to 2009.

Silva's return to his hometown follows a trophy-laden 15-year career in Europe with AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, and, most recently, Chelsea. The former Brazil skipper will be making his farewell appearance for Chelsea versus Bournemouth on May 19th, in what promised to be a difficult day at Stamford Bridge.

Silva recovered from injury to help Chelsea defeat West Ham 5-0 in the Premier League. The Brazilian will hope to play in the Blues' final three games of their campaign against Nottingham Forest, Brighton, and Bournemouth as they look to end a disappointing season on a high note and secure a spot in next season's Europa League. When Silva returns, he hopes to put an end to Fluminense's 12-year drought without a league championship.

What did Chelsea FC state while announcing his departure?

In a statement posted by Chelsea FC on their social media handle, the club said that, "Following four seasons with Chelsea, Thiago Silva will depart after our final game of the Premier League season against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge and re-join Brazilian club Fluminense.”

The statement added, "Chelsea have agreed with Thiago that he can join up early with his new teammates after signing a two-year contract with the Brazilian club. Thiago will be allowed to train with Fluminense prior to his registration transferring on July 1.”

The former Paris Saint-Germain defender’s achievements were also mentioned in the statement as it further said that, "The 39-year-old will depart Stamford Bridge having made more than 150 appearances for the Blues and having lifted the UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup. He has also forged a lasting bond with Blues supporters and was named the club’s Player of the Year at the end of the 2022/23 campaign."
