Aston Villa hosted Liverpool in the penultimate matchday of the 2023-24 English Premier League with both sides hoping for a win in the game. A win for the hosts would have meant direct qualification into next year's UEFA Champions League. For Liverpool, a loss in their final two matches would also not affect their position, but needed to give a fitting farewell to their departing manager, Jurgen Klopp.
The hosts had the worst possible start to the game as they conceded within 55 seconds of the start of play. Emiliano Martinez, their World Cup winning goalkeeper was at fault as the ball bounced off his hand and ended up in the back of the net. However, the Villains were able to equalise courtesy of a brilliant strike from Youri Tielemans.
The match was end-to-end as both the teams looked to attack and grab the second goal of the game. A brilliant run from Joe Gomez was met with a great pass from Luis Diaz and the former's shot was deflected straight into the path of Cody Gakpo who shot the ball into the back of the net. This meant that the Merseyside heavyweights had the lead at the end of the first half.
The second half began in the same manner in which the first one started with, as the hosts conceded an early goal once again. Harvey Elliot's cross from the free-kick was met well by Jarred Quansah, who towered above the Aston Villa defender to slot the ball into the back of the net.
Frantic second half action between Aston Villa and Liverpool
Three minutes later, Aston Villa got the second goal and made the game more interesting as Ollie Watkins ensured he made no mistakes after the excellent set-up by Leon Bailey. But the goal was later ruled out since the latter was deemed to be offside. John Duran was able to get back one goal in the 85th minute but it looked too little too late for the hosts.
However, Aston Villa looked to attack and get back at least a point. They got a reward for their efforts as a ball from John Mcginn put in a great ball but a lucky deflection from John Duran beat Allison and it ended up in the back of the net.
